Laina West’s article and picture in Artists and Illustrators magazine

“I was thrilled and not a little inspired by the wonderful photo realistic paintings in your March edition.  I have painted a few quite realistic animal portraits in pastel, but have often been put off by comments such as ‘seems a waste of time, a photo would be just as good’.

Personally, I love the challenge of capturing the character of an animal or pet in the small detail and have often thought I would like to try painting plates of food and cake from local cafes.  Your article has really encouraged me to give it a go.”

Well done to Penelope who has had her work selected to be shown in the Mall Gallery in London.

Exhibition open: Wednesday 3 February to Saturday 20 February, 10am - 5pm (closes 1pm on final day)

Penelope has been selected from 1,973 artists from across Europe and the UK to have their work shown in the 2016 Columbia Threadneedle Prize: Figurative Art Today.

Now in its eighth edition, The Columbia Threadneedle Prize is Europe’s leading open competition for figurative and representational art and, at £20,000, one of the most valuable art prizes in the United Kingdom. The winner will also be awarded their own solo exhibition in the Threadneedle Space at Mall Galleries (valued at £10,000).

The 2016 winner will be announced on 2 February 2016. Visitors to the London exhibition will also decide the Visitors’ Choice Award, worth an additional £10,000.

A selection of the works from the London exhibition will also be taken to Italy for a further one-month exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence in June 2016.

The Columbia Threadneedle Prize winner has been selected from 3,828 entries submitted from 29 countries by the following panel:

· Emma Crichton-Miller, columnist for Apollo magazine and Financial Times

· David Dawson, artist, writer and photographer

· Dr Arturo Galansino, Director General at Palazzo Strozzi
